The Silent Bone Fracture Disease

By Samira Ummat, MD December 10, 2018

Like the rest of our body, our bones are living and growing tissue, but we rarely think of it as living. Bone tissue is made of collagen and calcium phosphate. Throughout our lifetime, bone is being both built and resorbed at the same time. In childhood, more bone is laid down than resorbed and bone tissue becomes bigger and stronger. Hope for Hair Loss

By Dr. Jerry Mixon August 12, 2013

If you are not yet bald, but are getting rather thin on top, there is an new option to help you grow new hair. It’s called platelet rich plasma injections.

Platelets are tiny structures in your blood, which helped plug little breaks in your blood vessels. Platelets contain nine separate growth factors which are released to trigger rapid healing should you suffer damage to a blood vessel. In this procedure a few vials of your own blood are drawn with a needle. The blood is spun down and the platelets are concentrated and separated into a smaller volume of plasma. This platelet rich plasma can then be injected into 100 or more tiny points across your scalp. The growth factors released seem to trigger the hair follicles back to robust growth.

I have seen men and women who have doubled and tripled the amount of hair on their head by this simple and relatively inexpensive procedure.

Women: Be Blunt with Your Man

By Dr. Jerry Mixon July 29, 2013

It drives men crazy when a woman says, “well, if I have to tell you,” but here’s a newsflash – you do need to tell us.

The brains of men and women function very differently. We do not perceive ourselves or the world around us in the same way. Women are extremely good at interpreting body language and nonverbal social cues. We men are only good at recognizing potential threats. Men are pretty much hopeless when it comes to recognizing the social and emotional needs of a woman.

It’s not that we are trying to ignore you. It’s not that we don’t care. We just stink at nonverbal communication.

If you want the man in your life to know something, tell him. Tell him straight out, in simple words, and be sure you have his attention when you say it. Otherwise, we will miss what you’re trying to convey.

Getting it Right: Estrogen Replacement in Women

By Dr. Jerry Mixon June 21, 2012

I’ve written about this before, but it bears repeating. In spite of what people often say, estrogen is not a hormone – estrogen is a class of hormones. When a female patient comes to Longevity Medical Clinic and we start discussing Hormone Replacement Therapy, it’s critically important that we use the right type of hormones to accomplish our goal. Women can benefit dramatically from Hormone Replacement Therapy. But they need to receive human type hormone, in doses that maximize benefits while minimizing risks, and the hormones should never be given by mouth.
