Estrogen is a Class of Hormones

By Longevity February 18, 2013

Transcript:

Estrogen is not a hormone; it's a class of hormones. Almost every living thing makes some form of estrogen, including plants and animals. But the estrogens found in plants are quite different than the estrogens found in animals. And each species of animal has his own unique mixture of estrogens. Human beings make a unique mixture of estrogens not produced by any other animal on the planet. But traditionally, when women go to the doctor for treatment of their menopausal symptoms 95% of the time they are given a compound known as conjugated equine estrogens. These are estrogens extracted from the urine of pregnant horses, and represent a mixture of estrogens that are quite different from those normally produced by human beings.

Alpha Lipoic acid & Skin

By Longevity February 15, 2013

Transcription:

I once knew a young model who paid $400 an ounce for skin cream. When I asked her why she chose that particular cream, she said, “It’s the best.” When I asked her how she knew it was the best, her answer was “because it’s the most expensive”. When I looked at the ingredients, I was able to make a rough estimate their total cost, which was about $.70 per ounce. I would love to sell something that cost $.70 for $400, but my conscience would never let me go there. But let me share something with you that may help you to both look and function better, inside and out for a whole lot less money. One of my favorite antioxidants is alpha lipoic acid. I usually recommend between 600 and 800 mg two or three times per day. It is one of the

Getting it Right: Estrogen Replacement in Women

By Dr. Jerry Mixon June 21, 2012

I’ve written about this before, but it bears repeating. In spite of what people often say, estrogen is not a hormone – estrogen is a class of hormones. When a female patient comes to Longevity Medical Clinic and we start discussing Hormone Replacement Therapy, it’s critically important that we use the right type of hormones to accomplish our goal. Women can benefit dramatically from Hormone Replacement Therapy. But they need to receive human type hormone, in doses that maximize benefits while minimizing risks, and the hormones should never be given by mouth.

Cancer - An Ounce of Prevention

By Dr. Jerry Mixon September 30, 2009

Cancer has become a frighteningly common word in recent years. You read about it in the paper, hear about it on television, and even if you’re lucky enough not to have had it, you probably know someone who has. Worse still, if you believe everything you read or hear, it seems that just about everything we do in life is going to cause it.  Sunshine, peanut butter, chlorine and fluoride in your water, diesel fumes in the air, and the gasoline fumes you breathe when filling your gas tank, have all been indicated as factors that increase your risk of getting cancer. It’s enough to make a person want to crawl in a hole and eat nothing but anti-oxidants for the rest of his life. Despite all the scary news floating around out there, let me put some of this in perspective for you….

Firstly, it is important to understand what cancer is. Our DNA is comprised, to a large extent, of carbon. A small percentage of that carbon is radioactive and is constantly breaking

Are You a Pregnant Horse?

By Dr. Jerry Mixon August 4, 2009

I came across a news item the other day that irritated me. It was another one of those stories about how dangerous estrogen therapy is for post-menopausal women. It contained the usual tsking and finger-wagging over doctors who felt it necessary to interfere with the ‘natural process of aging and menopause’ and the horrible risks of cancer they cause while doing it.

There’s so much wrong with that position I scarcely know where to begin. First off, we scarcely need to discuss my opinion of the ‘the natural process of aging’. Suffice it to say, the natural process of aging is one of slow decline into a pitiable, crippled, wretched shell of a human being. My opinion: we don’t have to just give up like that.

The medical community started giving estrogen to post-menopausal women nearly 50 years ago for excellent reasons. Without it the health and quality of life of post-menopausal women was declining so precipitously, it became apparent that
