Standardized extracts of Saw Palmetto Berry (Serenoa repens) have been widely studied and used in Europe to support male urinary flow. The extract contains concentrated amounts of free fatty acids and sterols whichstudies suggest may reduce the amount of dihydrotestosterone (DHT) (an active form of testosterone) that binds to the part of the prostate that surrounds the urethra. Studies also suggest that saw palmetto extract inhibits the action of 5-alpha-reductase, the enzyme responsible for converting testosterone to DHT. In addition, it has been found to inhibit the actions of growth factors andinflammatory substances that may contribute to benign prostatic hyperplasia(BPH). Some, but not all, double-blind clinical trials have found that 320 mg per day of saw palmetto extract is an effective treatment for the symptoms of BPH.
